Preparing to care: as a flight nurse or nurse anesthetist.

Thoughts on a UNMC education:
"I’ve always been involved in the medical field somehow. My mom is a nurse and I was a medic in the military. The nursing program at UNMC is far superior to other programs I considered.”

– Michael

Outreach in the community:
“When I volunteer with the mobile nursing unit I see firsthand how the College of Nursing is a part of the surrounding community. It’s awesome being at health fairs and doing blood pressure and glucose level checks.”

– Lesley

Education and experience that’s in demand

Now is a prime time to pursue a degree in nursing. Professional nurses are in high demand, and graduates of the UNMC College of Nursing are finding a wealth of opportunities waiting for them.

As a nursing student at UNMC, you’ll gain experience in settings ranging from the hospital to a new mother’s home or our mobile nursing center. UNMC’s combination of theory, research and practice prepares you for the wide variety of situations you’ll encounter after you graduate. It’s a great career for both men and women from all different backgrounds!

Choose your degree and your destination

After you’ve earned your BSN, you can begin your nursing career or continue your education at UNMC with a Master of Science in Nursing (MSN) or a Doctor of Philosophy degree in Nursing (Ph.D.) — the only nursing doctoral program in Nebraska. If you already have a bachelor’s degree in another area and are looking to start a second career in nursing, UNMC offers a new 12-month intensive accelerated BSN program on the Omaha and Lincoln campuses.

You’ll have your choice of work settings as well. Choose from hospital systems, home health care, community organizations or businesses. Become a flight nurse, ER nurse, cardiac care nurse or pediatric nurse, among others.

And if research is your interest, you can work as a graduate student with faculty members who are developing new ways to prevent osteoporosis in breast cancer survivors after menopause, deliver cardiac rehabilitation to heart patients and promote healthy lifestyle changes to older women.

The UNMC College of Nursing BSN and MSN programs are accredited by the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education. The college is recognized as one of the top graduate nursing programs in the country by U.S. News and World Report.
