Lisa D. Keathley

Fourth-year pharmacy student. Preparing to care: where she can serve her community in pharmacy.

Impressive faculty:
“Our teachers are discovering new drug delivery systems, leading the cardiology department and managing the liver transplant program that was started at UNMC. They are truly interested in learning and understanding the role of pharmaceuticals in health care.”

More than pill counting:
“Most people think of pharmacists as pill counters, but no, it’s a little more than that.

“Early in the program we get practical experience in retail, clinical and community service.”

Diverse career opportunities — in one degree

Think of the career possibilities for a Doctor of Pharmacy (Pharm.D.) degree recipient — and then think again. Today’s pharmacy students are preparing for incredibly diverse careers in the field.

And they’re getting a great start at UNMC. The four-year UNMC pharmacy program is heralded as one of the most innovative and comprehensive in the country. We’ve been included in some pretty prestigious company as one of U.S. News and World Report’s top pharmacy schools. Students here enjoy the opportunity to learn and work as part of a total health care team and take their knowledge to the community, too.

Where can a Pharm.D. take you?

There’s a whole world of possibilities in a Pharm.D. from UNMC, thanks to an extensive education from dedicated faculty with years of experience in research and patient care. Become involved in exciting research at the UNMC College of Pharmacy, such as improving drug delivery systems through nanoscale technologies – implantable devices 100,000 times smaller than the head of a pin – or work with faculty to develop a new vaccine for malaria.

Graduates can choose careers in the pharmaceutical industry, community pharmacies and hospitals, home health care, managed care, or as part of a drug therapy team, among others. And with additional training after graduation, pharmacists go on to specialize in fields including oncology, cardiology, pediatrics and geriatrics.

The UNMC College of Pharmacy is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education.
