Get the inside scoop!
Cytology is the study of the structure and function of cells. With the help of a microscope, cytotechnologists look for clues in the cells to diagnose such things as cancer, precancerous lesions, benign tumors, infectious organisms and inflammatory processes.

A cytotechnologist evaluates cells from all sites in the body, including the lungs, bladder, liver, pancreas, thyroid, breast and lymph nodes. Once the cells have been evaluated, the cytotechnologist provides an interpretation for each patient sample they screen. When an abnormal result occurs, the cytotechnologist refers the case to a pathologist.

Due to advances in science and technology, the responsibilities of cytotechnologists are rapidly expanding. Their jobs are both challenging and rewarding. Although they have little patient contact, cytotechnologists help save lives by discovering diseases early.

Experienced cytotechnologists may hold positions at the supervisory, educational and administrative levels.
