Make it happen!
Does a career as a medical nutrition therapist/registered dietitian sound like it might be for you? If so, here's an overview of the coursework you'll need to get you on the path.
High School
Get a jump start in high school. Pursue a strong college preparatory program. Check with your school counselor to make sure you earn enough credits in the core curriculum to meet college entrance requirements. A core curriculum includes courses in English, mathematics and the sciences. You will also need to take either the ACT or SAT test for college admission.

College
Let's assume you want to enroll in UNMC's Medical Nutrition Education Dietetic Internship Program.
Before you apply, you'll need to earn a baccalaureate degree from an accredited college or university.
You'll need to complete a didactic program in dietetics accredited by the Commission on Accreditation for Dietetics Education of The American Dietetic Association. In many colleges or universities, this requirement can be met as you obtain your baccalaureate degree with a major in dietetics or foods and nutrition. Check with your advisor.

Professional Education
Here's a step-by-step guide to help you plan your course:
As you near completion of your baccalaureate degree and didactic program requirements, you will be eligible to apply to UNMC's 11-month Dietetic Internship Program.
The curriculum for UNMC's Dietetic Internship Program involves supervised practice experiences guided by registered dietitians and ten semester credit hours of coursework. All clinical dietitian preceptors are licensed medical nutrition therapists in Nebraska.
The supervised practice rotation schedule includes:
Medical Nutrition Therapy (Adult and pediatric) in inpatient and outpatient clinical settings |
Clinical and Foodservice Systems Management |
