One of the more successful efforts to work with minority studies is in a very unlikely location, the heart of lily-white east TN at East Tennessee State University. Black medical students have done very well there. Most are from very different environments. Many are facing the challenge of a lifetime in a medical career. Nearly all face the significant internal challenges of doing well for their families, their race, and themselves.
ETSU has gathered a group of "foster parents" that adopt this students as their own. As such they have ready access to those who have overcome significant and similar obstacles.
Sharing character is the highest calling of mentorship.
