This is the description of the preparation of the 25000 FP Grads. This file was initiated from AMA masterfile data on all physicians with FP designation or training. This was compared to AAFP files at the Graham Center with the able assistance of Ed Fryer.
The sample is not completely allopathic FP, since it includes self-designated FPs and osteopathic physicians. Comparison with AAFP files noted about 4000 additional physicians. The initial file compiled from AMA and AAFP data searches was missing only 1000 FP grads from the AAFP graduate database.
The data collection points used in the recent 25000 graduates were in September of 2001 for the graduates of 1997 - 2000 and November of 2003 for the 2001 - 2003 graduates. The collection points were too soon for 2000 and 2003 graduates and the AAFP file was used to gather information on location for those who had the same or similar zip code compared to residency training. Use of the two collection points was an attempt at determining the first location of practice for grads from 1997 - 2003.
When available, the zip code of practice was utilized. I compared zip codes with residency in those recent grads to determine if the resident had moved to a practice on not, cross checking between AAMC and AAFP files, as well as internet resident location web sites
There is also a file of student attendees of the 1998 AAFP Student Resident mtg in KC as a part of this. 60% of this group of students so far has chosen FP with a few more still to choose FP in this group in the future.
The file has medical school, yr of graduation, birth year, ethnicity,
I have added info on graduating class sizes, medical school characteristics, residency data
Also I have tracked those in each state which have been born, attended med school, residency, and practiced in the state. The birth state and ethnicity data is only 80% or so for the US allopathic med school folks
Additional data includes markers for FP graduates that graduated from residency in the same state, an adjacent state, regional states, or distant states or locations. This is useful for recruitment and retention studies or state to state comparisons.
