CHECKLIST FOR RURAL PROGRAM DEVELOPMENT

 

This may be used to determine whether a proposed program has the potential for success, to outline areas of need for developing programs, as a progress marker for those developing rural programs, or as an evaluation tool for existing programs.

Those wishing to develop rural programs may want to utilize the checklist and convert it into a progress or evaluation sheet on a 1 to 5 scale.

 

Support by Institutional, Director, Program, Hospital, and State

Faculty with rural practice experience and a vision for rural training & a personal commitment

to develop rural programs, sites, and curricula, including rural practice management

to advise trainees and with a commitment

to work with and in rural communities

Adequate faculty support and support staff

Facilitated access to trainees for long term rural recruiting (noon and evening events)

Organized medicine support

Access to quality rural moonlighting sites

Recruitment of residents and faculty with a priority on those interested in rural

Access to procedural training

Support by rural communities and rural physicians and frequent contact with same

Existence of other rural programs and faculty at the institution
