Abstract:

A recent surge in the acquisition of physician practices by hospitals, health care systems, HMOs, insurers, and practice management companies apparently began in
urban areas with heavy managed care penetration and now appears to be expanding to rural areas. There is no valid empirical information available on rural physician
practice acquisitions. The objectives of this study are to: 1) estimate the proportion and type of rural physician practices that are being acquired, and describe who is
acquiring; 2) describe the terms of sale for those practices; 3) assess why rural practices decide to sell or not sell; and 4) examine the influence of environmental
characteristics (e.g. physician competition, managed care penetration, local health system characteristics, service area population characteristics) on rural physician
practice acquisitions.
