Bayard Rustin

was a black man who embraced the Quaker teachings of his parents. He who was doing non-violent resistance long before Rosa Parks took her stand (her sit on a bus to assert her rights). Rustin was a voice of reason in a time of insanity. He debated many who were attempting to inflame blacks into violence. He was the organizing force behind the civil rights movements in the US for decades.  http://www.spartacus.schoolnet.co.uk/USArustin.htm

Rustin was often a lone voice promoting non-violent means and openly debating black leaders who promoted violence. More about Rustin: The invisible man in civil rights http://www.time.com/time/magazine/article/0,9171,1101030120-407356,00.html

Because Rustin had been a member of the communist party and was gay, he was denied recognition throughout his life. That he accomplished so much despite so many obstacles, is quite a testament.
