A program could combine the numbers of US citizens streaming to International Medical schools and choosing primary care, with the best of US medical education: Rural Medical Education.
A year long primary care preceptorship in the 4th year of medical school would
1. Orient graduates to the US health care system
2. Give exposure and experience in rural and underserved and primary care
3. Give better career orientation for those choosing primary care as well as those choosing specialty disciplines
4. Provide outstanding medical education, good for US or International medical schools in greater need of the best training sites
5. Improve fill rates at US primary care programs and eventually US primary care workforce
6. Better potential for smaller rural locations to recruit such graduates and to benefit from their services during the M-4 year and after graduation
