Membership Items and Information for RME Group

Rural Medical Educators Special Interest Group of the National Rural Health Association

We have voted to affiliate with the NRHA. We are now officially a Special Interest Group within the Research and Education Constituency Group. If we maintain over 100 members, we will be eligible to become an official constituency group with Board Members and Policy Board Members. NRHA members can participate in official functions. Any interested person can participate in the list serve of this group which will be run by NRHA. The interim Chair is Robert C. Bowman with Deb Phillips a co-chair. The Office of Rural Health Policy has provided funds to assist this group with initial functions. The major activity this year will be the Rural Medical Education meeting May 22 and 23 for elections, networking, education, and planning. The group mission is:

to foster and promote rural medical education through networking, education, and research. Members of the Special Interest Group (SIG) will meet to share issues regarding medical education funding, rural medical education programs and curricula, and other relevant concerns.

History of Rural Medical Education

Proposed National Association of Rural Medical Educators

This group got things started and explored options. It began with the Rural Graduate Medical Education conference in San Antonio in February 2000 set up by Tom Rosenthal, Pat Taylor, and the Office of Rural Health Policy.

STFM Group on Rural Health

The STFM Group on Rural Health consists of rural physicians, faculty, and others interested in training more and better rural physicians. The group works at multiple points along the pipeline to rural practice to stimulate interest, support, encourage, develop curricula, implement programs, and convince state and national leaders to implement policies that have been proven to graduate more and better physicians. For current activities, check out the 1998 Group Report.    Group Plan 1996-97   Group 2000
