Combined Primary Care Track

The Primary Care Program accepts six medical students finishing their third year of medical school at UNMC only. It is a division of the Internal Medicine department (in conjunction with Family Med Dept.) and is designed to help residents return to rural Nebraska with the combined breadth of Family Medicine with the depth of Internal Medicine. Rural is defined as any area outside Omaha and Lincoln. It is a four year program that allows residents to become board certified in either Internal Medicine or Family Medicine. This decision is made at the end of the second year. Those choosing Internal Medicine will complete their training at UNMC. Residents who choose Family Medicine may remain at UNMC or select any of the four Rural Training Tracks. During the first year of the program the financial situation is identical to that of a student. Primary Care Track students get a cost of living stipend and a tuition waiver. These costs will be absolved once the graduate has practiced medicine for two years in a rural area. PC track residents receive a salary for their final three years of training.  Many have chosen rural training track programs for graduate training. This is the only internal medicine rural graduate program in the nation.
