From AAMC Stat:
In recognition of their longstanding, institutional commitment to serving the
needs of their local communities, Creighton University School of Medicine and
University of Nebraska Medical Center have both been awarded the Outstanding
Community Service Award from the Association of American Medical Colleges (AAMC).
This is the first time in history that two academic medical centers have
received this award, which was presented Saturday at the AAMC 114th Annual
Meeting in Washington, D.C.
The Outstanding Community Service Award, established in 1993, recognizes
exceptional community service programs that go beyond the historical role of
academic medicine to reach communities whose needs are not being met through the
traditional healthcare delivery system. As Nebraska's only two medical schools,
Creighton University School of Medicine and University of Nebraska Medical
Center both received this award for their community service contributions to the
state's residents.

Comment: This was also the first time that a medical school had received such an award on the first time nominated (UNMC). Although Creighton and UNMC share various efforts and responsibilities for the underserved, the joint award did not reflect joint efforts.
This award is not a reflection of any particular individuals. In some ways the students have contributed as much as faculty. If nothing else UNMC does a good job of staying out of the way of such top notch folks, and facilitating the efforts of a few. If only more allopathic medical schools followed this example.
It took me 4 years to understand all that UNMC was doing, especially in the Department of Family Medicine. Residing here has certainly given me the perspective to write about the following: Community Driven Approach: Linking Resources with True Needs
