Back to Objectives for Rural Programs and Curricula
Initial learning plans exchanged, mid course correction, special support such as nurse or staff person who looks out for learning opportunities, etc.
Hopefully the emphasis on education is an attitude that permeates all primary care training. Unfortunately there are some programs that do not supervise well. Some do not advise well. Others allow little room for personal or clinical growth.
Attitudes - Faculty must provide an environment supportive of primary care. Evidence of this environment is provided by the willingness of the residents to take on new responsibilities and take advantage of the opportunity to expand their knowledge into new areas. This involves a careful balance of supervision and responsibility that is sufficient for all yet individual in application for each resident. Students and residents should be given hands-on responsibility for taking care of patients.
