Allopathic graduates of 1987 - 1999 and career probabilities by medical school

The percentage of each graduate over age 29 at graduation choosing each specialty was determined. This became the numerator. The percentage of all graduates from each medical school choosing a specialty was determined. This was the denominator. The figures below represent the probability of a graduate of the school who is older than 29 years at medical school graduation being found in a certain specialty.

The considerations are two way. Some prefer certain careers, others have less chance of attaining a certain career. Some careers have substantially changed. The data below on EM or emergency medicine mainly involves the primary care and family physicians that became EM physicians. Current EM is a much different career. Elite and eastern schools have the lowest choice of family medicine. They also have the lowest admissions of students likely to choose family medicine. Older graduates choosing internal medicine are much more likely to stay in office based primary care. Younger graduates prefer science and technology careers.

Careers beyond those show below are also calculated. These were the most common. Email rbowman@unmc.edu for more detailed analysis.

Proceeding far to the right there are fewer total graduates and there is variability in small numbers, especially in the eastern schools and those with the highest MCAT scores that admit few older graduates.
