The Rise in Rural Training Tracks http://www.aafp.org/fpr/20000400/11.html
Choose a residency where you get to make decisions and do things. You need to be in charge to be able to make good decisions and do the procedures that will come in rural practice. Choose electives that help you explore rural practice. Make choices early and often by using your residency. Come to the AAFP Annual Student Resident Meeting and Recruitment Fairs to get procedural updates and check out the rural presentation and practice sites. Do moonlighting to get experience and check out different rural sites. See Calendar.
The Next Step: Beyond Residency
What are good people to use that won't harass me or get paid a recruiting fee for all my hard work? How do residents search for a practice? Why not visit the Annual Student Resident Meeting in KC? See Calendar How about your state FP association? For more see Future.
The Residency Review Committee in Family Practice restricts away locations to no more than 2 months a year. This is done to protect your "continuity" practice. Of course the most common disruption for your continuity practice is the fact that you have little time at the clinic and hospital rotations are usually a priority, but..... Some RRC policies have improved so it may be worth pushing the limits a bit more than in the past..
