Steven P. Wengel, M.D.
Dr. Wengel is a geriatric psychiatrist at the
University of Nebraska Medical Center. He attended medical school and did both
his general and geriatric psychiatry fellowships at UNMC. Dr. Wengel is the
first geriatric psychiatry fellow trained at UNMC, is board certified in general
psychiatry and has added qualifications in geriatric psychiatry. Currently, his
clinical duties include providing inpatient and outpatient geropsychiatric
services, and consulting with the Nebraska Health System as well as four local
nursing homes.
Dr. Wengel is very active in the teaching of
medical students, psychiatry residents, pharmacy graduate students, and fellows
in geriatric psychiatry and geriatric medicine. He serves as acting chairman and as the Director of
Medical Student Education for psychiatry, overseeing the psychiatric and
preclinical education of 125 junior medical students who pass through the
department annually. He directs two separate courses for the residents in the
department.
Dr. Wengel’s research interests include the use
of electroconvulsive therapy for Parkinson’s disease and the use of
cholinomimetic agents for treatment of delirium.
