Research is focused on immune responses to model antigens and bacteria and viruses that infect the liver. Emphasis is on the immunopathologic effects of the immune responses to hepatotropic viruses and bacteria. Studies on the responses of hepatocytes to infection, activated lymphocytes, and cytokines are done with the use of experimental animal models as well as in vitro assays. Studies are also being done to determine the immunoregulatory aspects of immune responses to pathogenic miroorganisms in the gastrointestinal tract.
