Introduction to Medicine in the 21st Century

Each fall, incoming first year students participate in a three-day orientation session which has the following goals:

  • Introduce students to their classmates and some of the faculty.
  • Learn the basics of problem-based learning (identification of learning issues and the appropriate resources to research the case).
  • Develop an understanding of some of the stresses of medical school and the support services available.
  • Introduce students to the campus computer system.
  • Review library resources, including literature searching using a computer network.

Groups of faculty work with students in small groups to analyze a case (e.g. a medical student with abdominal pain), develop learning issues, research resources, and learn about campus support services.
