Training Requirements

UNMC must meet certain training requirements in order to be compliant with federal, state and local laws and regulations. These regulations require members of the workforce be trained on a variety of topics. Many of our training programs are available through the UNMC Intranet — get step-by-step instructions on how to check your training status. To learn the compliance training you are required to make, contact your compliance training coordinator.

Here is a list of all the compliance requirements for UNMC:

Biosafety Level 3 (IBCMOD2)  
Targeted Audience: Anyone working with or having access to risk group 3 pathogens (indigenous or exotic agents) that may cause serious or potentially lethal disease as a result of exposure by the inhalation route
Frequency: Annual
Regulatory Basis: NIH Guidelines Sections IV-B-1-h
Additional Information: Laboratory personnel are also required to complete the General Biosafety Training.

Bloodborne Pathogen (BBP)  
Targeted Audience: All individuals at risk for blood and/or body fluid exposure
Frequency: Annual
Regulatory Basis: OSHA: 29 CFR Part 1920.1030
Additional Details: All members of the workforce are evaluated annually for risk of exposure to blood or body fluids or other potentially infected materials. Individuals who have been identified as having a reasonably anticipated exposure must review the Bloodborne Pathogen training materials and pass the appropriate test below:

  • BBP Medical Test — required if you work in a hospital or clinical setting or are involved in direct patient care; students are also required to complete this test
  • BBP Research Test — required if you are a researcher or work in a laboratory environment
  • BBP General Test — required if you are at risk for potential exposure to blood, body fluids, or other potentially infected materials, but do not provide direct patient care or work in a laboratory setting

Employees who do not meet the requirements for BBP training are BBP Exempt and no training is required.

CITI Certification

Cultural Competency

Additional Details:

Cultural competence requires that we acquire relevant knowledge and develop skills that help us to communicate and work more effectively with individuals who are culturally diverse. This training has two tracks:

  • Track 1 — for anyone who works in a patient care setting
  • Track 2 — for anyone who works in an office, laboratory or other area that is not directly involved in patient care

DOT Security Awareness

Universal Waste

Additional Details: Universal waste includes batteries (non-alkaline), pesticides, mercury containing items, lamps and electronic items. Individuals who pick up and remove this waste by bringing it to its appropriate storage location must adhere to all the regulatory storage, disposal and emergency response requirements.
