mdcp dao faq's

The following questions, with answers, represent some of the most frequently asked questions about the MDCP.

What is the purpose of the MDCP?

The MDCP is a program which provides technologists an opportunity to upgrade their education to the Master's level, specifically to a Master's in Perfusion Science.  This is the same degree awarded to the students enrolled in the traditional UNMC Clinical Perfusion Education programs.  The program recognizes that it is difficult, and most of the time impossible, for working Perfusionists to attend on-campus traditional programs.

Who is eligible?

Perfusionists who have 1) graduated from an accredited Perfusion training program from within the US or Canada and 2) present to UNMC MDCP with a Bachelor's degree earned IN ADDITION to the perfusion training.  Current certification, licensure, or clinical practice is NOT necessary.

How does it work?

Accepted applicants are enrolled through the School of Allied Health Professionals, Distance Education Office at the University of Nebraska Medical Center (UNMC).  When the assigned work is completed, continuing education credit is awarded and a MPS Diploma is issued by the UNMC Office of Academic Records.

What is the length of the program?

The program is intended to be completed on a part-time basis while the technologist continues to work in their profession.  Students are allowed up to 36 months from enrollment to complete all the courses of their Plan of Study, however the program can be completed in less than one year.

Is there an application deadline?

Applications are accepted year-round for enrollment in the Fall (late August), Spring (early January), and Summer (early June) semesters.  Completed application packets and official college transcripts must be received by the MDCP at least 60 days prior to the beginning of the semester you intend to enroll in order to allow time for processing of your application.

Diplomas will be issued only twice each year - May and December - dependent upon the student's completion of all requirements by the deadline dates set by the Program.

What costs are involved?

Please visit the Tuition & Fees page.

Must I pay the entire amount at one time?

No.  You will pay as you register for classes and order course materials each semester.

Do I have to enroll in classes every semester?

No, you do not have to enroll in classes every semester, just keep in mind that not all the courses are available each semester and you should complete your Plan of Study within 36 months of enrollment in your first class.

I am a Perfusionist that is not working in the profession.  Am I eligible?

Yes.

When I complete the program, what will happen?

When you complete all the requirements for the degree, you will receive a "Notification of Completion" letter from the Distance Education Office.  This letter will advise you when the actual diploma will be issued.  You may attend graduation (May or December) or you may request to have the diploma mailed to you by UNMC.  You may obtain your UNMC transcripts only after the diploma date.

Can I earn continuing education credit?

The ABCP will permit Category III CEUs for course work.  Related course work is awarded one CEU per activity with a limit of 15 CEUs.  Please review the ABCP Booklet of Information (http://www.abcp.org/boi.htm) for details.

What is the curriculum of the MDCP?

Please visit the Curriculum page.

How will I be awarded the credit hours required for a Master's from UNMC?

You will enter the program at a Bachelors level.  You will receive transfer credit from UNMC for the training accomplished from your accredited perfusion education program.   You earn additional graduate studies semester hours while enrolled in the MDCP program.  Upon completion of the MDCP, you must apply for graduation.  At that time, your transcripts will be reviewed for credit by the UNMC Office of Academic Records.

Is the MDCP accredited?

The MDCP is an integral part of the University of Nebraska Medical Center School of Allied Health Professions, which is accredited by the North Central Association of Colleges, and Schools.  The MDCP is considered a professional degree program and does not include a clinical education component; therefore, it is not under the purview of CAAHEP.
