SUN-APTA Students of the University of Nebraska-American Physical Therapy Association

The Students of the University of Nebraska-American Physical Therapy Association is endorsed by the University of Nebraska. Membership is automatic by virtue of membership in the American Physical Therapy Association (APTA). This organization helps to promote a professional relationship between the students and the community.

SUN-APTA members assist at the annual PT3's honors and awards convocation, write the SUN-APTA column in the Division Newsletter and sponsor educational meetings, philanthropic activities, and social activities. Activities are financed through fundraising projects such as the annual career fair. Members of the SUN-APTA may serve on committees of the Medical Center, School of Allied Health Professions and Division.


SUN-APTA ACTIVITIES:

 

Joint Effort Volleyball Tournament: This all night volleyball tournament is organized in conjuction with the Creighton University Physical Therapy Students to raise money for the Arthritis Foundation. This year over $4000 dollars was raised through donations and proceeds from the 70 teams who participated in the event. This year the tournament was held on February 28 at Creighton University.

 

American Red Cross Blood Drive: SUN-APTA members participate to help the region maintain cost-efficiency and ensure the blood supply is adequate for patients in need. This year, during the annual fall blood drive, we achieved over 100% of our goal.

 

Philanthropies: SUN-APTA members have the opportunity to participate in several activities benefiting others through events with the Omaha Volunteers for Handicapped Children, Race for the Cure, and dinner and cleaning at the Ronald McDonald House, Habitat for Humanity, gift purchases for Francis Sienna House.

 

Social Activities: There is always time for a little R & R. Past events include the annual Halloween Costume Party.

 

Professional Growth & Development: Resume workshop, PT/PTA issue discussion, Student Research Fund, Interdisciplinary case conference.

 

Public Relations: Several interactive and informational presentations are being given by UNMC PT students to local Omaha high school students in order to promote the field of Physical Therapy as a future career choice. A medical student forum on how MD's can utilize physical therapy as a part of their medical treatment plan.

 

National Student Conclave: The students participated in the Mock House of Delegates, Special interest meetings, career fair, and social events. Fundraising was done throughout the year to help pay for approximately half the cost of the trip for each student.
