2009 - Distinguished Alumnus Award: Kathleen E. Chavanu Gorman R.N., (M.S.N. '89)

Kathleen E. Chavanu Gorman, a Pleasanton, Neb. native, began her academic career at the University of Nebraska Medical Center College of Nursing receiving her Bachelor of Science in Nursing degree in 1989. Kathleen continued her educational journey at UNMC and received her Master’s of Science in Nursing degree in 1995 with a Pediatric, Clinical Nurse Specialist and Nursing Administration focus.

Kathleen has established herself with 20 years of pediatric nursing experience. She began her career as a pediatric intensive care nurse at St. Joseph Hospital at Creighton University. Kathleen perfected her clinical and leadership skills while working at The Hospital for Sick Children and Children’s National Medical Center in Washington, DC.

Kathleen has extensive expertise in quality measure setting and improvement, patient safety, executive nursing leadership, evidence based practice, workforce and nursing outcomes, revenue cycle management, case management, care coordination and utilization management. Kathleen has held adjunct faculty positions at Georgetown University and Howard University; published manuscripts in leading clinical journals; served in leadership positions within Child Health Corporation of America, The National Association of Children’s Hospitals, The National Quality Forum and The Leapfrog Group.

Kathleen recently joined The Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia as Senior Vice President and Chief Nursing Officer. She begins her work at CHOP on Oct. 16. She is leaving her previous job as Vice President of Quality and Clinical Support Services at Children’s National Medical Center in Washington, DC. 
           

2009 - Honorary Alumnus Award: Charles S. Wilson M.D.

Dr. Charles Wilson, a York, Neb. native, began his academic career at the University of Nebraska Medical Center being awarded a Bachelor of Arts degree with distinction in 1960. He then proceeded on to Northwestern University Medical School in Chicago, Illinois where he was awarded his Medical Degree in 1964.

Postdoctoral training included a medical internship with Fitzsimons General Hospital in Denver, Colorado, a Fellowship in Internal Medicine from the Mayo Graduate School of Medicine in Rochester, Minnesota, and a Fellowship in Cardiology also in Rochester.

Academically, Dr. Wilson has been a Clinical Professor of Medicine for more than three decades at UNMC. He was Clinical Faculty in Cardiology at Lincoln Family Practice Residency Program at the Lincoln Medical Education Foundation from 1974-2000; was a Lecturer of Cardiovascular Disease, the Medical Aspects of Rehabilitation graduate level course at UNL from 1976-1988 and was a certified instructor for Advanced Cardiac Life Support, American Heart Association from 1989-2002.

Dr. Wilson has held Medical Licensure in Nebraska (1971-present), Kansas, Washington, Minnesota and California. For 15 years Dr. Wilson was a Partner at Internal Medicine Specialties in Lincoln, Nebraska and proceeding that position, Dr. Wilson spent an additional 15 years as a Partner at Nebraska Heart Institute. Dr. Wilson also served on the University of Nebraska Board of Regents from 1991 to 2009 and has been a great advocate for UNMC and especially the College of Nursing.

Since 2001, Dr. Wilson has been the Medical Director of BryanLGH Medical Center Ultrafast CT Scanner in Lincoln. He also is the Medical Director of the School of Allied Health at BryanLGH College of Medical Sciences.
