2006 College of Pharmacy Alumni Awards

COPAA Past-President Steve Boyd, '00, COPAA President, Elizabeth Hermsen, '01, Distinguished Alumnus Recipient, Janel Foote, '74, Early Career Achievement Award Recipient, Janelle Massey, '89, and COP Dean, Clarence Ueda.

     The Distinguished Alumnus Award is presented to a living graduate of the UNMC College of Pharmacy to recognize an individual's noteworthy contributions to the University of Nebraska Medical Center, the pharmacy profession and to the health of all people through patient care, basic and clinical research, teaching skills and/or health services administration. The recipients will demonstrate the highest principles of the pharmacy profession and serve as a role model for current and future pharmacy professionals.


     Janel Toon Foote graduated from the University of Nebraska Medical Center College of Pharmacy with a bachelor’s of science degree in pharmacy in 1974. She went on to earn a masters of science degree in health administration from the University of Colorado College of Business.
     After graduation from UNMC, Janet worked as a staff pharmacist in the UNMC inpatient pharmacy. She participated in the early stages of pharmacy automation using mag card IBM and eventually pharmacy infant state computerization of pharmacy order entry. She left UNMC to be a staff pharmacist at Children’s Memorial Hospital in Omaha. She participated in the move from UNMC campus to Methodist campus. She worked with the pharmacy and MIS staffsto develop a pharmacy information system integrated in Methodist Hospital MIS system.
     Janel learned to fly and earned her ratings in 1983and 1984. She then began working for National Therapeutic Associates (currently Rehab Visions) as a pilot. Was promoted to Director of Marketing and then to Vice President Marketing.
I     n 1986, Janel flew the Alkan Highway up to Fairbanks, Alaska and on up into the Arctic Circle. She camped under the wing of her Cessna 172 in air campgrounds provided on airports along the way.
     Most currently, Janel was director of pharmacy services for Mary Lanning Hospital in Hastings.
     Janel’s professional, state and community involvement include the UNMC Rural Health Education Network Steering Committee, UNMC Future Excellence Steering Committee, American College of Health Care Executives, American Society of Consultant Pharmacists, Nebraska Pharmacists Association and many others.

     The Early Career Achievement in Pharmacy Award is presented to an alumnus who has graduated within the past 20 years (1986 - 2006) from the UNMC College of Pharmacy. The award recognizes an individual who has made distinguished achievements and contributions early in their career to the pharmacy profession, the UNMC College of Pharmacy or the UNMC College of Pharmacy Alumni Association.

     Janelle, or as she is known, Jill, graduated from the University of Nebraska Medical Center College of Pharmacy with a doctor of pharmacy degree in 1989. She completed a geriatric psychopharmacy residency at Mercer University School of Pharmacy in conjunction with Emory University in Atlanta, Georgia. In 2004, Jill earned her Masters of Business Administration degree from Drexel University LeBow College of Business in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.
     She joined the faculty of Saint Louis College of Pharmacy and served as the Director of Geriatric Pharmacy Practice at the Program on Aging at Washington University School of Medicine while maintaining a clinical practice at the Jewish Hospital of St. Louis until 1993.
     Jill has thirteen years experience in the pharmaceutical industry support scientific affairs organizations in a variety of positions at Bristol-Myers Squibb Company and Ortho-McNeil Pharmaceutical, Inc. She is currently Vice President of Scientific Affairs. Her responsibilities include creating an organizational architecture that will provide innovative, efficient, customer-focused, scientific services to support Ortho-McNeil Neurologics, Inc., Janssen LP, Pricara, Inc., the Ortho-McNeil Janssen Scientific Affairs Strategic Business Group and the Johnson & Johnson Health Care Systems organization.
Jill has received several awards including the Inovative Business Award from Bristol Myers Squibb, Optimus Award from Ortho-McNeil Pharmaceutical and Rising Star Award from Healthcare Business Womens Association.
     Jill resides with her husband and two children in Basking Ridge, New Jersey.
