Physical Therapy

In 2005, the University of Nebraska Medical Center Physical Therapy Alumni Chapter was established. The UNMC Physical Therapy Alumni Chapter’s mission is to foster goodwill and loyalty among graduates of the Physical Therapy Education program at UNMC, while helping to support the programs and philosophies of the Department of Physical Therapy of UNMC.

In this year alone, the PT Alumni Chapter helped support UNMC’s first year PT students with the White Coat Professional Induction Ceremony, naming the Pat and Bruce Hageman Alumni Student Award and providing the PT 3 party send off, prior to final clinicals. The Alumni Chapter also hosts a reception at the NPTA state meeting each spring and participates in the UNMC Alumni Reunion each fall.

If you have any questions or are interested in participating in the Chapter, please email alumni@unmc.edu or call 402-559-4385.

News from the Physical Therapy Department:

Rita Parks Agnew, longtime Physical Therapy Department staff member, retires after 37 years

Congratulations to Rita Parks Agnew, BSG, Student Affairs and Budget Coordinator for UNMC’s Physical Therapy (PT) program!

Rita announced that she will be retiring at the end of May after nearly 37 years of service.  Since joining UNMC in October 1974 under the founding program director, Mary Ellen Sacksteder, Rita watched the program grow from 2 classes of 16 students to its present 3 classes of 50 students.  She has been the familiar “go to” person helping 96% (1012 of 1056 total) of PT Education graduates, representing 36 classes.

Rita is fondly referred to as “a cornerstone” of the program by its faculty in recognition of her unwavering dedication to the program, assisting 30+ program faculty and all 6 program directors.  When asked what has been the most rewarding part of her career, Rita quickly replied “the students, they keep you on your toes!  Without the students, there would not be a program.”  After spending over half of her life working in the Physical Therapy Program, Rita is looking forward to an active next chapter of her life.

"We thank Rita for her many years of service to UNMC and the Physical Therapy Department," said Nick Reiss, President of the Physical Therapy Alumni Chapter.  "Rita made a difference for countless students and we wish her all the best."
