This course is designed as an Advanced Course in Perioperative Echocardiography to help anesthesiologists and critical care physicians become experts in the field of perioperative echocardiography, focusing on both transthoracic echocardiography (TTE) and transesophageal echocardiography (TEE). The course will meet on-site for 4 week-long sessions over the course of one year. The course is broken into three core modules: 1) a didactic series covering the National Board of Echocardiography’s Examination of Special Competence in Advanced Perioperative Transesophageal Echocardiography (Advanced PTEeXAM), 2) TTE and TEE image acquisition with both live models and echo simulation, and 3) Peer review of the student’s own echo examinations with electronic feedback.
You will have didactics from advanced TEE and TTE trained certified instructors while on-site as well as hands-on instruction for TTE and TEE via echo simulation. Most learning takes place as you complete your studies at your own institution and bring them back for peer review. This is something unique to our course and has proven successful in the past training courses at UNMC. You will also be given access to the web-based teaching files, where pre-graded echocardiography studies can be reviewed and interpreted at your own pace and instant feedback given on your interpretation. Students who finish the program feel very comfortable with hands-on surface echo (TTE) as well as TEE skills.
