At UNMC, simulation is a growing component of resident education in Anesthesiology. In cooperation with the College of Medicine, simulations are performed in the clinical skills lab of the Michael F. Sorrell Center for Health Science Education. Incoming CA-1 residents are oriented in the simulation lab prior to working in the operating room and a 3 year curriculum has been designed to expose residents to a number of critical scenarios. Simulations are performed on a monthly basis.

Each simulation strives to expose the resident to an acute, high risk scenario in a low risk environment. The center is designed to create a safe environment for residents to learn in critical situations without risk to patients. The use of a high fidelity mannequin enables the instructor to create a scenario with multiple choices and outcomes. A scenario “playboard” is created and physiologic parameters are created for all situations, drugs used and clinical decisions. Faculty develop objectives, instructions for set-up, background and instructions for all players and discussion points for each scenario. In essence, an interactive play is created which includes resident participation.
