Circulation Policies and Procedures
 

 

Loan Periods

Borrowing

  • Books circulate for 2 weeks with 2 two week renewals.
  • Current journals circulate for 24 hours with no renewals.
  • All other journals circulate for 3 days with 2 three day renewals.
  • All materials may be renewed in person or by telephone. You do not need the book or journal with you to renew the item in person.

Returns

  • Two books drops are available for returns. Third floor Wittson Hall across from the elevators and at the circulation desk.

 
Renewals

The loan period on books and bound journals can be extended in person at the Circulation desk or by phone at 402.559.4006. Books can be renewed for 2 two week renewals and bound journals can be renewed for 2 three day renewals provided no one has placed a hold on the item.

 
Photocopying/Printing

The library provides 4 copy machines and one microfiche/film reader/printer. There is also a copier on the 2nd floor of the College of Nursing. Copicards are available for purchase at the circulation desk in $2, $5 and $10 amounts using Mastercard, VISA, personal checks, or cash. Copicards in larger amounts ($20 or $50) can also be purchased from the Library Circulation Desk using company center numbers. Coins may be used in one of the library copy machines and the copy machine located at the College of Nursing.

Printing from reference computers: To defray the high cost of paper and toner the library is now charging to print materials from the Reference computers. The library printers do two-sided copying and the charge is 5 cents per sheet of paper. There is no charge for cover sheets. Copies may be picked up and paid for at the Circulation Desk. $2 print cards are also available for purchase at the Circulation Desk.

 
After Hours Access

It is the policy of the University of Nebraska Medical Center (UNMC) to provide 24 hour access to the Library of Medicine for faculty and housestaff who may need access to emergency patient care information.  Click here for Emergency Access Procedures.

 
Borrowing Priveleges

All faculty, staff, and students from UNMC and The Nebraska Medical Center personnel may borrow library materials by presenting their UNMC or Nebraska Medical Center photo identification card, and completing additional registration information at the Library Circulation desk. Privileges will not be granted without a valid UNMC or Nebraska Medical Center photo identification card.

 
Special Borrowing Priveleges

Nebraska residents who are members of health related, scientific, teaching, clergy, and legal professions or employees of a health related institution or firm in Nebraska may, through special arrangmenets with the Head of Circulation, Associate Director for User Services, or the Director, be extended the following borrowing privileges. Documentation of their profession, i.e. medical license, or affiliation with a health related institution or firm will be required before completing the special privilege forms. Borrowers may check out 10 books maximum - no journals.

UNO, UNK, or UNL faculty may check out books and journals provided the materials are not on Reserve by showing a valid photo id: 5 books or journals are the maximum.

Nebraska consumers may receive limited borrowing privileges to the CHIRS (Consumer Health) collection by presenting a valid Nebraska driver's license. Consumers are limited to the following privileges. 5 books maximum - no journals.

Nebraska Library Association College and University Faculty are granted special borrowing privileges with the following limitations: 10 books maximum - no journals. Students from these same campuses are not granted any borrowing privileges. They must restrict their use of library materials to in-house only. Overdue Fines/Lost Book Fees
  • Overdue Fines: The service charge on overdue items is 20 cents per day, per item. There is a 4 day grace period on most items except reserve items and study room keys. Service charges are paid at the Circulation desk.
  • Lost Book Fees: A standard fee of $25, which includes processing costs, will be charged on books, single issues of journals, and bound journals in addition to the full replacement cost of the item. Overdue fines may also be charged if the lost item is not reported to the library within the check-out period.
  • Unpaid library charges will result in being blocked from checking out materials from the UNMC Library, not being able to register for classes, request transcripts, access records on the student website, or request any type of enrollment verification.

 
Print Reserve

The library allows faculty and students to place materials on reserve at the circulation desk for use by UNMC students. This service is designed to provide a controlled, ready access to items that are used for course readings. The materials are listed by course number or by the faculty name. Materials may be borrowed for 2 hours for use in the library. To borrow these materials a valid UNMC photo id is required. Contact Sue Clark at 402.559.4006 or email saclark@unmc.edu

 
Special Collections Use
  1. Materials in the History Collections of McGoogan Library do not circulate. Use is restricted to the rooms with a Library staff member present at all times. These materials include:
    • All materials housed in the Rare Book Rooms
    • All materials housed in the History of Medicine Room
    • History of Medicine vertical file materials (e.g. clippings, reprints, scrapbooks, reports, realia)
  2. Photocopying of rare book materials may be allowed but all photocopying must be done by the Library staff.
  3. Photographs may be made of some materials through scanning in the Learning Resources Center.

These materials will be available 8:30 a.m. - 4:00 p.m. Monday - Friday, and access will be controlled according to established procedures. For use of these materials, make an appointment in advance with the Special Collections Department. Access at other times (in exceptional circumstances only) must be done through special arrangements beforehand or access may be granted by the Head of Special Collections.

 
Study Rooms

The library has 16 locked study rooms located on the 7th floor of the Library which are available to UNMC students, faculty or staff. To use a room a key must be checked out from the Circulation desk. The keys are checked out for a 2-hour period. They may be renewed for 2 more hours. Customers that return a key late are charged $1 per hour. When leaving a study room, make sure the door is closed so that the room is ready for the next user.
