Center for Biosecurity

The University of Nebraska Center for Biosecurity serves the state of Nebraska and the nation by developing resources to address both human and agricultural (plant and animal) biosecurity concerns. The center, administered by the University of Nebraska Medical Center, draws on the expertise of faculty members from four campuses in a unique educational collaboration of scientists and medical professionals who participate in education, research, and public service programs.


CENTER FOCUS

  • Develop and expand clinical, educational and research infrastructure
  • Conduct research into surveillance, protection and treatment of potential bioterrorism agents in both human and agricultural systems
  • Enhance information security, information sharing and technology-based communication systems
  • Support the rapid collection and analysis of data critical to early detection of possible bioterrorism events
  • Develop bioterrorism related educational programs for students, health professionals, first responders and the public
  • Strengthen rural agro-security efforts

INTERCAMPUS STRENGTHS

  • UNL and UNMC researchers collaborate on basic research programs in infectious diseases, including studies contributing to vaccine development, and a UNL/UNMC team is studying Francisella Tularensis, which has been identified as a biological threat.
  • UNO and UNMC have instituted novel demonstration projects for active surveillance of public health in the United States, particularly in rural areas.
  • UNMC, UNO and UNL scientists and clinicians are collectively conducting research on biodefense and biosecurity related problems in animal and human health
