Tongji University is one of the leading universities directly under the State Ministry of Education in China. It offers degree programs both at undergraduate and postgraduate levels. The university now registers over 50,000 students at all levels from certificate and diploma courses to bachelor's, master's and doctoral degrees, as well as postdoctorate programs. There are over 4,200 academic staff members, including six members of the Chinese Academy of Science, seven members of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, over 710 professors and 1,500 associate professors. The university confers degrees in 82 bachelor's disciplines, 218 master's programs, 94 doctorate programs and 16 postdoctoral programs. As one of the leading centers for scientific research, the university has 22 state key laboratories and engineering research centers.
The Medical School of Tongji University has offered medical education to a large number of students has enjoyed an excellent reputation both at home and abroad since it was established in 1907 as Tongji German Medical School. In 1950, the medical school of Tongji University moved to Wuhan. In 2000, Tongji University acquired Tiedao University and the medical school of Tiedao University became medical school of Tongji University. Now the Medical School is under the medicine and life science faculty of Tongji University, and consists of the School of Stomatology, School of Basic Medical Sciences, Tongji Hospital, Railway Workers Hospital and Oriental Hospital. The Medical School offers three bachelor's programs, 20 master's degree programs and two doctoral programs. Four hundred of its faculty members are professors and associate professors, including supervisors for doctoral students.
As a department strongly supported by the university, the medical school is developing rapidly. A medical teaching and laboratory building is equipped with advanced facilities for teaching, treatment and research. The school intends to produce more medical professionals adaptable to modern society by reforming its curriculum, and providing more senior staff to teach aspiring physicians.
