December 2010

Please congratulate Srustidhar Das of Dr. Batra's lab for receiving a highly competitive federally funded Predoctoral Traineeship Award from the Department of Defense (DOD).  He is funded for a three-year period starting January 2011 amounting to 128,315 for his work "Molecular characterization of MUC16 (CA125) in breast cancer."  In this work, he is trying to understand the molecular mechanism of MUC16 mediated breast cancer progression with particular emphasis on the role of MUC16 cytoplasmic tail (MUC16CT).

November 2010

Please congratulate Jennifer Kopanic and Rosslyn Grosely, both of Dr. Paul Sorgen's lab, who were awarded 1st and 2nd place (respectively) for their poster presentations at GRASP, the regional NMR meeting.

October 2010

Subhankar Chakraborty of Dr. Batra's lab published a first author research article in the prestigious American Journal of Gastroenterology.  The study identified a novel serum-based biomarker, Neutrophil gelatinase associated lipocalin (NGAL), for the diagnosis and predicting prognosis of patients with severe acute pancreatitis.  The Reuters news agency wrote a special report covering this novel discovery.  Further, Nature Reviews in Gastroenterology and Hepatology, one of the leading journals in the field of clinical gastroenterology, picked this study as one of the Research highlights of 2010.

We would like to congratulate Juliati Rahajeng of Dr. Steve Caplan's lab for receiving an American Society for Cell Biology Travel Award to attend the 50th annual meeting in Philadelphia this December 2010.

Juliati Rahajeng also received a first-author Journal of Biological Chemistry "report" for top 5% of all J. Biol. Chem. papers from this past summer 2010.

Also congratulations to Bishuang Cai of Dr. Steve Caplan's lab for her excellent first-author paper in the prestigious journal Traffic, entitled "Pre-sorting endosomal transport of the GPI-anchored protein, CD59, is regulated by EHD1" which has been published in Traffic, October 20, 2010, doi: 10.1111/j.1600-0854.2010.01135.x. [Epub ahead of print].
