Congratulations to Lili Gong, of Dr. David Li's lab, who has been awarded a travel fellowhip by the National Foundation for Eye Research. Lili is invited to give an oral presentation at the 2009 US-Japan Eye Research Congress to be held in Kona, Hawaii.
September 2009
Rosslyn Grosely and Kelly Virgil, both students in Dr. Paul Sorgen's lab, attended the regional NMR meeting over the weekend of September 26-27 and received awards. Rosslyn received an award for the best oral presentation and Kelly received an award for the best poster presentation.
Amit Tuli, graduate student in Dr. Joyce Solheim's lab, has been selected to attend the Annual NIH National Graduate Student Research Festival (NGSRF) and present his research. This event is scheduled to occur on November 12-13, 2009, on the main campus of the NIH in Bethesda, Maryland.

Congratulations go to our recent graduate, Marko Jovic, of Dr. Caplan's lab, who has been awarded the Thomas Jefferson Ingenuity Award. This award consists of a check for $500 and an honor plaque. It is awarded to recognize a caring Ph.D. graduate student at the University of Nebraska Medical Center who has exhibited unmatched creativitiy and ingenuity in completing the research requirements of his/her doctoral dissertation.
Shantibhusan Senapati of Dr. Surinder Batra's lab recently received a Department of Defense Predoctoral PhD and MD/PhD 3-year Prostate Cancer Training award.
Amit Tuli of Dr. Joyce Solheim's lab submitted an abstract to The American Association of Immunologists (AAI) meeting that was held May 8-12 in Seattle, Washington. His abstract was selected for an "AAI Trainee Abstract Award," which provides a cash award of $500 to AAI Trainee Members (students and postdoctoral fellows) whose first-author abstract is submitted to the AAI Annual Meeting is selected for oral presentation in an AAI Block Symposium.

Congratulations to Marko Jovic of Dr. Caplan's lab for having another paper in press in "Molecular Biology of the Cell." His paper will be written up in the American Society for Cell Biology newsletter "InCytes" section as a featured article containing important new contributions to the field. It has also been nominated for a Molecular Biology of the Cell Paper of the Year award.

Mi Deng of Dr. David Li's lab received a travel fellowship in September 2008 from the International Society of Eye Research. He then gave an oral presentation at the Young Investigators' Symposium I of the XVIII International Congress of Eye Research in Beijing, China.
Mahak Sharma of Dr. Caplan's lab applied and was selected for the NIH Annual National Student Research Festival. Her poster was presented at this meeting at NIH in Bethesda, Maryland, which was held September 10-12, 2008.
Amit Tuli of Dr. Joyce Solheim's lab has received a scholarship from UNeMed to attend the "Making It! The Second Annual Business Start-Up Conference" held on September 25-26, 2008, here in Omaha, Nebraska.

Shantibhusan Senapati and Subhankar Chakraborty, both students in Dr. Batra's lab, were involved in the International Student Research Forum (ISRF) that was hosted at UNMC on June 2 and 3. Students from all over the world presented their research to one another at this forum. This forum also allows students to develop relationships with international students with similar research interests in hopes of future collaboration beyond the lines of disciplines and nationalities.

Please wish Mahak Sharma of Dr. Caplan's lab congratulations on receiving a prestigious 2-year American Heart Association Predoctoral Fellowship (she received a score of 1.29 and was in the 7th percentile). A total of 55 applications were funded out of 154 applications reviewed. The title of Mahak's project is "The Role of EHD4 in endocytic transport." The award begins July 1, 2008.
