 Chris Helzer

Chris Helzer
Eastern Nebraska Program Director, Nebraska Field Office, The Nature Conservancy

"The science of Nebraska's prairies"
09/04/12 @ The Slowdown

Chris Helzer is an ecologist and program director for The Nature Conservancy. Based in Aurora, he supervises the management and restoration of about 5,000 acres of land in central and eastern Nebraska. He is the author of the book, “The Ecology and Management of Prairies” and blogs at http://prairieecologist.com. Chris is also a well-known photographer, whose images regularly appear in NEBRASKAland magazine and other publications.

Chris’s presentation will cover how prairies once covered nearly all of Nebraska, and the state is still about 50% grassland. The creatures that live in those prairies are fascinating, and each has its own story. There’s an inchworm that camouflages itself with bits of the flower it feeds on, a bird that flies around singing like R2D2, and a spiny plant that folds its leaves when touched – and many many more. So why is it that Nebraskans know so little about them? The fact that kids know more about rainforests in Brazil than prairies in their own state makes it difficult to get those kids (and their parents) to support conservation. To make things worse, many of today’s grasslands – especially those near population centers – tend to be relatively small, and don’t look very interesting from a distance. Chris Helzer uses a combination of photography, natural history, and personal stories to describe why prairies are interesting, important, and worth saving.

Jason has authored fifteen research papers and has registered two inventions, including a promising compound intended to selectively target cancer cells. Aside from the technological achievements that have arisen in this ‘genomic’ age, Jason is also interested in the medical and ethical issues that have been raised regarding the vast amount of public, private, and personal DNA sequence data that will soon be available.

"From Tomorrowland to Today: Reflections on Energy and Transportation from Walt Disney"
04/06/11 @ The Slowdown

Physiological ecology is a new discipline that provides a unique method for investigating processes at the individual level that are responsible for regulating populations.  This interface represents a new direction in biology where we can begin to link specific cellular processes into a generalized ecological theoretical framework.  My research interests are centered on understanding the link between physiology and population/behavioral ecology.  Several broad questions represent my interests and illustrate the focus of my research program.  How does maternal body condition influence offspring survival, fitness, and dispersal ability?  What is the link between habitat quality, nutrition, and immune function and how does this affect survival, reproduction, and dispersal.  Finally, what roles do energetics and thermoregulation play in species susceptible to global warming (e.g., alpine/arctic species).  Model species that I use are focused on mammals, but also include reptiles and amphibians as ectothermic model species.  For a complete list of current and past projects and publications visit my homepage.
