2008 Cattlemen's Ball A Success

A sell-out crowd of nearly 4,000 people gathered at the Niewohner Cattle Company near Albion, Nebraska for the 2008Theresa Franco, R.N. checks the blood pressure of a Cattlemen's Ball attendee in the Eppley Cancer Center Screening tent. The Cattlemen's Ball is held on a different Nebraska ranch or feedlot every year, raising money for cancer research at the Eppley Cancer Center while showcasing beef as part of a healthy diet. Friday evening, June 6, Trail Boss ticket holders enjoyed a cocktail reception at the ranch. On Saturday morning, June 7, a champagne brunch kicked off the full day of activities that included live and silent auctions, a casino, wine and cheese tasting, fashion show, working dog demonstration, quilt presentation,UNMC Eppley Cancer Center director Dr. Kenneth Cowan thanks the crowd for their support at the Cattlemen's Ball in Albion. general store, and free cancer screenings, provided by the Eppley Cancer Center. 74 men were screened for prostate cancer through a PSA (prostate specific antigen) blood test, nearly 300 people were evaluated for facial sun damage, and 200 blood pressures were checked. Volunteers also distributed information on colon cancer. The day's events culminated with a prime rib dinner and concert by Grammy-award winning country group Diamond Rio.

"The people of Nebraska have this great spirit of giving that makes the Cattlemen's Ball an enormous success every year," said Kenneth Cowan, M.D., Ph.D., director of the Eppley Cancer Center. "No words can express how grateful everyone at the Cancer Center is for this outstanding event that raises money for cancer research."

To date, the Cattlemen's Ball has raised nearly $2 million for cancer research at the UNMC Eppley Cancer Center. Next year's Ball will be on June 5 and 6 at the Crane Trust in Doniphan, Nebraska, approximately 12 miles south of Grand Island.

Burger King will 'Beat Cancer For Kids' for Fifth Year

For the fifth year in a row, Simmonds Restaurant Management of Omaha is fighting childhood cancer with 'Beat Cancer For Kids.' Participating Burger King locations in Omaha, Des Moines, and surrounding areas will kick-off the campaign on July 1, selling scratch-off cards for $1 apiece. The cards contain food prizes, as well as chances to be entered into the drawing for this year's grand prize, a vehicle from Woodhouse Auto Group. Proceeds from the month-long campaign go to pediatric cancer research at the UNMC Eppley Cancer Center.

Since its beginning in 2004, Burger King 'Beat Cancer For Kids' has raised $540,000 for childhood cancer research. It is an extension of the Liz's Legacy Fund, established to honor the late Liz Karnes, wife of former Nebraska senator David Karnes, who died of ovarian cancer in 2003. "Amazing strides have been made in the treatment of childhood cancers, due to the research taking place," said Kenneth Cowan, M.D., Ph.D., director of the UNMC Eppley Cancer Center. "Burger King 'Beat Cancer for Kids' offers hope to children with cancer and their families. We are grateful to Simmonds Restaurant Management for their passion and commitment to eradicating cancer in children."
