Dr. Stephen J. Bonasera is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Internal Medicine-Division of Geriatrics and Gerontology and the Department of Pharmacology and Experimental Neuroscience. He received his M.D. from Emory University School of Medicine and his Ph.D. in Neuroscience from Emory University School of Arts and Sciences.  Dr. Bonasera completed residency training and a geriatrics fellowship in the Department of Internal Medicine at the University of California, San Francisco and holds a Geriatric Medicine Subspecialty Certification. He also has a B.S.EE from Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University and an M.S.EE from Georgia Institute of Technology.  Dr. Bonasera is a member of the American Association for the Advancement of Science, the Society for Neuroscience, and the American Geriatrics Society.  

Dr. Bonasera’s research focuses on the neurobiology of aging. In particular, his group focuses on understanding how aging changes the brain’s ability to perform important behaviors that individuals need in order to remain independent. These behaviors include physical activity, eating, drinking, resting, and socializing. Dr. Bonasera currently holds a NIH R01 grant, a grant from the Alzheimer's Association, and a “Best New Invention” award from the University of Nebraska UNeMED Corporation. His major research interest includes behavioral and developmental neuroscience, genomics, functional status, and translational research.
