The Michael F. Sorrell Center for Health Science Education is located on the northeast corner of 42nd and Emile streets. The center is the home of the College of Medicine, and also provides classrooms and study areas for students from all colleges across campus.
The building is open weekdays from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m., except for major holidays. All UNMC students, faculty, and staff have access after hours to the perimeter doors, walkway, and areas on the first 3 floors using their photo ID badges. Additionally, students have access to the 4th floor study areas. Identification must be worn at all times when in the building.
If after hours access is required for non-UNMC individuals (visitors, non-UNMC staff/faculty) you must send a request for special access to Campus Security - Jim Graves or Tina Renner. The request should be made as far in advance as possible.
The building has four primary areas that may be scheduled: the Truhlsen Campus Events Center, the academic areas, Distance Learning rooms, and the Clinical Skills Laboratory.
Truhlsen Campus Events Center
The Events Center and all public spaces in the Sorrell building are scheduled through the office of Public Relations. Additional information may be found at the Campus Events center website: or by contacting Candace Peteler, Campus Events Center Coordinator, at 402-559-5192.
Distance Learning Classrooms
There are currently three distance learning rooms in the Sorrell building. These rooms are reserved for distance learning courses. To schedule a distance learning course, contact Pat Hoffman in ITS/Video Services or you can submit a request electronically to centralized room scheduling.
The Clinical Simulation Laboratory
The Clinical Simulation Laboratory (CSL) has a 32-seat instructional/preparatory room, 10 large exam rooms, six smaller exam rooms, a hospital suite and two simulation suites. Additionally, the CSL is equipped with high-tech simulation models for interactive instruction. It is utilized by all colleges across UNMC's campus. To find out more information or to schedule the CSL contact Jonathon Sample or 402-559-2969 or visit the website.
The academic areas are primarily reserved for instruction of students enrolled in one of the colleges on UNMC's campus, or Distance Learning classes conducted through UNMC. There are two large auditoriums, four seminar classrooms, two technology labs, and 22 interaction rooms. There is no advance scheduling of these areas, and academic courses will receive first priority for scheduling. Academic courses must have a UNMC course ID number.
Convenience Store & Food Vendors
Located on the second floor across from the commons area and atrium, the convenience store offers snacks, cold beverages, coffee, school supplies, an ATM machine, and other materials for students. Store hours are 7:30 a.m. to 4 p.m., Monday to Friday during the school year, and 7:30 a.m.to 1:30 p.m., Monday to Friday during summer break.
