Welcome to Comparative Medicine

The Comparative Medicine administrative offices are located in the new Durham Research Center II. Our "twin" research building, the Durham Research Center I,  has now been occupied since 2003.

 

Our mission is to ensure the well-being of animals used in UNMC’s biomedical research, teaching and testing program,ensure compliance with applicable federal regulations and accreditation standards, and to maintain and improve the quality of research animal facilities, equipment and professional research support services in a cost efficient manner.

 

Comparative Medicine provides professional veterinary medical, husbandry and proposal review services to support animals used in biomedical research.The UNMC animal care and use program has been accredited by the Association for Assessment and Accreditation of Laboratory Animal Care, AAALAC International since 1966. The accreditation process provides continuing voluntary peer review of the UNMC program by internationally recognized experts. UNMC is registered as a research facility with the United States Department of Agriculture under the Animal Welfare Act .The care and use of animals used for research at UNMC is based on national guidelines and Federal Regulations including:
