Ayman El-Mohandes, M.B.B.Ch., M.D., M.P.H.
A global leader in perinatal health, Ayman El-Mohandes, M.B.B.Ch, M.D., M.P.H., uses his expertise for new interventions that reduce infant mortality.
Born in Egypt and fluent in English, French and Arabic, Dr. El-Mohandes is internationally known for his innovative solutions to eliminate health disparities. With uninterrupted funding from the National Institutes of Health since 1994, he collaborated with health departments, organizations and community members to improve the outcomes of minority pregnant women and their children.
Dr. El-Mohandes implements the model for successful public health interventions: community-based participatory research. It requires not only a commitment to a particular community, but also strong participation from its members. That’s why he was selected to help design and supervise a multi-million dollar, 10-year neonatal project in Egypt.
As part of the leadership team, Dr. El-Mohandes’ group trained hundreds of health care professionals and provided innovative solutions towards the improvement of health systems. The result: a 50 percent reduction in the infant mortality rate.
In 2009, Dr. El-Mohandes joined UNMC from George Washington University, where he was chairman of the department of prevention and community health in the School of Public Health and Health Services, a practicing neonatologist and professor of pediatrics and obstetrics in the School of Medicine.
