Dr. Dorheim is a graduate of the University of Nebraska Medical Center, Omaha, Nebraska. He completed his residencies in General Surgery at the University of Oklahoma and in Cardiothoracic Surgery at the University of Wisconsin Hospital and Clinics in Madison, WI.
Dr. Dorheim is a graduate of UNMC (1987). After completing his general surgery residency at the University of Oklahoma (1994), he specialized in cardiothoracic surgery at the University of Wisconsin Hospital & Clinics in Madison, WI (1994 - 1996). In addition he spent 2 years researching myocardial preservation at the State University of New York at Buffalo (1989 - 1991). Dr. Dorheim practiced at Methodist Hospital in Omaha from 1996 - 2007. While there he served as section chief of cardiothoracic surgery, chairman of the department of surgery and medical director of the lung/thoracic oncology clinic. He is currently an associate professor of surgery in the section of cardiothoracic surgery at UNMC. He serves as medical director of adult cardiac surgery and has been actively involved in various clinical trials to improve the outcomes in both open heart surgery, and lung cancer. His interests involve off-pump coronary artery bypass, minimally invasive valve surgery, surgery for atrial fibrillation, and in the development of quality improvement processes that improve the outcomes of cardiac surgery at the University of Nebraska Medical Center. He and his wife, Annette are parents of 2 daughters, Kalyn and Megan.
