Doreen Smeltzer
is a clinical educator for DENTSPLY Professional, covering the Midwest region of the U.S. She is a graduate in oral hygiene from the University of Pittsburg, School of Dental Medicine, and holds a bachelor’s degree in education from Edinboro University and a master’s degree in adult education from National Louis University. She serves as an active dental hygiene consulting examiner for the North East Regional Board of Dental Examiners. She has developed and presented educational programs for dental and dental hygiene students, professional associations, dental societies and study clubs both nationally and internationally.

Course Description:
This course can help you help your patients age gracefully. You’ll review the most recent statistics on aging and learn about the oral ramifications of the most common diseases and conditions related to the aging process. The course also will introduce you to the treatment protocols best suited for older patients who have special medical/oral concerns.

Educational Objectives:

  • Recent data on aging that examines population, economics, health status, health risks and behaviors, and healthcare
  • How the top health concerns related to the aging process impact oral health, including the oral implications of medication
  • How to recognize key indicators of well-being
  • Information about common oral concerns such as root caries, xerostomia, dentinal hypersensitivity, periodontal disease, tooth wear and fractures
  • Guidelines for prophylactic antibiotics for infective endocarditis and joint replacements
