Occlusion 101

Course Instructor:

Dr. Kirk A. Nelson is a general dentist with an emphasis in restorative and esthetic dentistry. He has been in private practice in Atlantic, Iowa since 1986. He received his Doctor of Dental Science degree from the University of Iowa in 1983. Dr. Nelson is currently on the visiting faculty at the The Pankey Institute in Key Biscayne, Florida, and teaches mostly about anterior function and esthetics. He also lectures and works with study clubs around the country.

 

Course Description

Just as most golfers would rather practice their driving rather than their short games, as dentists we often would rather focus on esthetics or implants rather than occlusion. However just as the short game is the key to scoring in golf, an understanding of occlusion is the key to predictability and long term success in dentistry.

This short course in occlusion will cover such topics as: centric relation, condylar guidance, anterior guidance, envelope of function, envelope of motion, edges of anterior( teeth, pitch, bevel), centric stops, crossover, line and plane of occlusion.

 

Course Objectives:

To highlight premier dental technologies, equipment, and materials preferred for aesthetic restorative dentistry. To outline specific clinical steps and skills necessary to perform these activities to ensure success. To establish a sound plan based on ample research and the selection of the proper restorative system specific for the individual case. To enhance your practice by achieving admired results on routine type cases, based on confidence and knowledge to forge ahead with new ideas.
