We have completely updated our entire undergraduate curriculum to a
competency-based format. This department-wide effort involved 13 pre-clinical
courses, 8 clinical courses, and 4 lecture courses. The ARD faculty
course directors along with our staff personnel worked hard to achieve
this accomplishment. Clinical competencies are designed to measure the
performance of a student working independently. At present, our clinical
course competencies on patients include: mandibular/maxillary full dentures,
a full-gold crown, a class 2 amalgam, and a class 3 composite. A suggested
number of clinical procedures should be completed before students can
challenge the competency exams. In addition to the clinical competencies,
undergraduate students must also complete additional simulation (dentoform)
and laboratory prescription exercises. Finally, students must successfully
complete a "senior competency" clinical exam which is modeled
after the Central Regional (CRDTS) licensure exam.
