Course and Objectives:
This hands-on laser training course is designed for general practitioners and members of the allied dental specialties to advance the understanding of laser technology and its numerous applications in soft tissue procedures. During this training program, participants will receive instruction on the use of diode lasers for soft tissue applications in dentistry and will also have the opportunity to perform simulated laser procedures during the course.
After completion of this course, participants should be able to:
- Diagnose and perform soft tissue procedures with lasers
- Understand the unique properties of laser light
- Learn how lasers interact with oral tissues
- Identify factors which can influence the impact lasers have on oral tissue
- Understand the indications/contraindications of soft tissue laser usage
- Learn wavelength and operating parameters of common soft tissues lasers
- Become familiar with the safe and effective set up, operation, and maintenance of laser systems
Method of teaching: Lecture/discussion/hands-on
Dr. Alan Swett, D.D.S., graduated from The University of Iowa College of Dentistry in 1983 and has been in private practice in Johnston, Iowa, for 25 years. Dr. Swett is an early adopter of high technology in his dental practice with a strong commitment to applying laser technology to the dental field. He introduced his first soft tissue laser dental procedures into his practice in 1992. In 1993, Dr. Swett was asked to be one of five dentists nationwide to conduct the clinical trials for FDA approval of the hard tissue laser. He worked with clinical trials until approval was received in 1997. Since 2006, Dr. Swett has served as an adjunct faculty member at the University of Iowa College of Dentistry in the Operative Dentistry Department. Dr. Swett works with junior dental students and mentors faculty and graduate students as they begin integrating laser dentistry techniques into their patient care.
