Dentistry class of '09 perfect on national boards ... again

Members of the UNMC College of Dentistry Class of 2009 got a 100 percent pass rate on the second part of their nation board exams. The repeat performance is reminiscent of the 100 percent pass rate they got when the students took the first part of their national board exams. "The national failure rates for the Dental National Boards (either Part I or Part II) are about 10 percent, so for an entire class to have 100 percent passing on the first administration is a significant accomplishment," said John Reinhardt, D.D.S., dean of the College of Dentistry. Over the past 20 years, the only other dental class that has had the same level of success was the Class of 2006. "This success is a tribute to the bright, hardworking students and to the exceptional faculty who teach them," Dr. Reinhardt said. UNMC Today article, Tuesday, April 21, 2009

Renovated dentistry faculty practice opens in Lincoln

At the faculty practice at the UNMC College of Dentistry in Lincoln, there was never enough room. There wasn't enough space in the waiting room for families to wait for appointments. And when someone in a wheelchair came to see the dentist, several of the chairs in the waiting room had to be pulled out to accommodate the wheelchair. There wasn't enough room in the operatory area and there were not enough operatory chairs. If there were more patients than chairs, the faculty dentists had to search for an empty dental chair in the student clinics. But that has changed. The remodeled clinic has been expanded from 1,500 to 3,000 square feet. Read more...

UNMC loses Dr. Wheelock -- a prolific researcher and mentor

Margaret Wheelock Ph.D.Although the research skills of Margaret "Peggy" Wheelock, Ph.D., enabled her to land sizeable grants that transformed UNMC scientific landscape, her greatest legacy lies in the many junior faculty she mentored. "Peggy was truly devoted to mentoring junior faculty and her only priority was making sure those she mentored succeeded," said Ali Nawshad, Ph.D., an assistant professor in the department of oral biology in the College of Dentistry who in 2005 was recruited to UNMC from Harvard by Dr. Wheelock and her husband, Keith Johnson, Ph.D. Dr. Wheelock, a professor in the College of Dentistry's department of oral biology and one of the medical center's leading cell biologists, died Saturday from complications related to cancer. She was 63. Read more...

Childrens' Dental Day

In Fall, 2001, the UNMC College of Dentistry began a program to devote it's entire Lincoln facility, students, staff and faculty for a full day to provide dental screening, diagnosis, cleaning and care to underserved children in Nebraska . The children typically come from non-fluoridated communities and have little or no access to dental care. The program is now held each winter and is scheduled to coincide with the ADA's Give Kids A Smile day in February.

About 175 Nebraska children from 10 communities received free dental care during the 15th Annual Children's Dental Day at the College of Dentistry on Friday.

More than $100,000 in services are provided at this one-day event. The children received services such as cleanings, fluoride treatments, sealants, cavity fillings, education and emergency care as needed.

The UNMC College of Dentistry hosted its first Children's Dental Day in the fall of 2001. The value of care delivered over the past six years by the UNMC College of Dentistry exceeds $1.5 million.

NIH renews Dr. Wheelock's CoBRE grant

Peggy Wheelock, Ph.D. Steve Caplan, Ph.D. When you're a new investigator, having just one person to ask for suggestions about the complicated world of grant writing is helpful. Having two high profile researchers as your mentors for five years is unheard of. But that is exactly the winning formula Peggy Wheelock, Ph.D., said led to the success of seven junior investigators at UNMC to obtain their own RO1 grants from the National Institutes of Health (NIH). Research NIH Funding

The College of Dentistry was ranked 24th in NIH funding for federal fiscal year 2007, tied for the third highest ranking the COD has achieved in its history. The COD was ranked 13th in NIH funding per FTE, the third highest ranking in the history of the College.

This is now the fifth consecutive year that the COD has been ranked in the top 25 in NIH support to dental schools and the seventh consecutive year that the COD has been ranked in the top 30 in NIH support to dental schools. Extramural research funding is now fifteen-fold higher than ten years ago.

College of Dentistry celebrates new endowed faculty fellowships

Demand for quality dental faculty remains high across the United States, and John Reinhardt, D.D.S., dean of the UNMC College of Dentistry, estimates there are 400 full-time faculty positions currently available. Reinhardt told a group of college supporters earlier this month that recruiting and retaining top dental faculty at UNMC's College of Dentistry continues to be a high priority for him, and that he's especially grateful for the backing of two new endowed faculty fellowships. Program could increase pediatric dentists in Nebraska

Of the 36 pediatric dentists currently practicing in Nebraska, only four have practices in communities outside of Omaha and Lincoln. That's chilling when you consider that dental disease is the most common chronic ailment for children ages five to 17. "Twenty five percent of the children in the state experience 80 percent of the dental disease reported," said Kimberly McFarland, D.D.S., assistant professor in the department of oral biology at the UNMC College of Dentistry. To address this challenge the College of Dentistry is implementing a new telehealth and service learning program for its pediatric dental residents. Read more...

Nebraska Teledentistry Project

In an effort to more completely serve the oral health needs of the people of Nebraska, especially those in rural areas, the University of Nebraska Medical Center (UNMC), College of Dentistry (COD), began implementing a Teledentistry Project in 2003. Children receive free dental sealants, fluoride treatments

by Vicky Cerino, UNMC public affairs

You might not expect to see a dental hygenist in an elementary school, but Cynthia Tiedeman says there's a critical need for such services. Tiedeman, the school nurse at Liberty Elementary School in downtown Omaha, was on hand when volunteers -- junior and senior dental hygiene students from the UNMC College of Dentistry - recently placed sealants and provided fluoride treatments on the teeth of 175 second- and third-grade students. "This is such a nice way to introduce children to oral health professionals," Tiedeman said. "If this weren't available here, the children would not get it. I believe in prevention. Toothaches interfere with learning." Read more...
