Laboratory
Nearly 9,000 square feet of completely renovated basic science research
space, part of the Cruzan Center for Dental Research, has just been completed.
This area houses 4 molecular/cellular biology laboratories, 1 biophysics
laboratory, cold room, light microscopy room, constant temprature and humidity
room, histology laboratory, reagent preparation and autoclave room, 3 general-use
equipment/fume hood alcoves, and a biomaterials analysis suite. Additional
laboratories for anaerobic microbiology, electron microscopy, and neurophysiology
are adjacent. A rodent animal care and surgery facility is located on the
lower level of this College of Dentistry building. Research laboratories
contain facilities for cell culture, refrigerated centrifugation, photography,
enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA), radioimmunoassay (RIA), SDS-polyacrylamide
gel electrophoresis, Western, Northern and Southern blotting, dot blot,
cell blot, immunohistomorphometry, extraction of bacterial cell wall components,
protein purification, anaerobic culturing, CO2 incubation, scanning and
transmission electron microscopy, DNA/RNA probes-polymerase chain reaction,
cytokine and antimicrobial bioassays, cell proliferation, counterflow centrifugal
elutriation, and genetic probe construction and transfection.
Clinical
The Clinical Research Facility in the Cruzan Center for Dental Research
was completed in the spring of 1998. Included in the Center is a 7,000 square
foot new addition which houses 4 large research operatories, reception area,
a 420 square foot secure data entry/storage room, preparation laboratory,
and supporting staff offices. Operatories are available for procurement
of human clinical samples and measurements, as well as performance of clinical
trials. The operatories are approximately 180 square feet and contain a
full complement of dental equipment appropriate for clinical procedures,
including a Florida electronic probe. Cephalostat and conventional radiographic
equipment are available in the operatories, and the microbiology/cell biology
laboratories are one floor below. Computer-assisted densitometric subtraction
radiography equipment is located in the data entry/storage room.
