Policy on Advanced Standing
This is a new policy for Advanced
Standing which supercedes the one adopted by the faculty in May, 1989.
This policy applies to students who have a foreign dental degree. This
does not apply to transfer students from dental schools in the United
States or Canada or to students of the UNMC COD who are seeking readmission
to the College.
1. Applicants will be required to have completed a 24 month-minimum postgraduate
program in a clinically-related dental discipline at an ADA accredited
institute in the United States or Canada before being eligible to matriculate
at the College of Dentistry.
2. Applications for advanced standing will be received in accordance with
College policies including an application deadline of March 1 of the year
preceding the applicant's desired matriculation. Early application is
encouraged as offers of admission may be made anytime after December 1
for the following fall semester.
3. Nonimmigrant foreign students will have to meet the College's requirements
for foreign applicants as described in the College of Dentistry bulletin.
4. Applicants must have passed Part I of the National Board Examination
in Dentistry within five years of the anticipated matriculation date with
an average score of 85 or above.
5. Applicants will be reviewed by the Admissions Committee for eligibility.
Those determined to be eligible will be reviewed by the Academic Affairs
Committee. The Academic Affairs Committee will determine a priority ranking
of applicants for an interview and a total number to be admitted and forward
this to the Admissions Committee.
6. The Admissions Committee will invite the recommended applicants for
a personal interview. The interview procedure will include an opportunity
for the applicant to meet with department chairpersons and the deans to
ask questions and clarify issues related to the advanced standing.
7. The offer of admission will be made by the Dean upon recommendation
of the Admissions Committee. Admission will be contingent on the student
accepting the offer and submitting an Advanced Standing fee of $20,000 per year or $40,000 total to the College.
8. Each student will be responsible for university tuition, and fees appropriate
for their residency and course-load status. The student issue fee will
be negotiated depending on the equipment owned by the student in accordance
with College of Dentistry policies.
9. Ordinarily, students granted advanced standing will be admitted to
begin as first semester sophomore students, contingent on demonstrating
competency in ARD 532, Operative Technology and PER 538, Theoretical Periodontology,
prior to matriculation. Prospective Advanced Standing students are expected
to arrive at the college on July 1 and to complete the competency examinations
by the beginning of the Fall Semester, (mid-late August). For these courses,
students will be given a maximum of two opportunities to successfully
pass the competency tests. If the student does not pass the tests, admission
with advanced standing will be withdrawn and the advanced standing fee
will be returned. If the applicant successfully demonstrates competency
in ARD 532 and PER 538, the student will be expected to meet all sophomore,
junior, and senior year requirements.
10. Advanced standing students will be given the opportunity to test out
of any class as provided by current policy.
11. No favoritism will be given to advanced standing students in the assignment
of patients.
12. Early completion of clinic requirements may be done by completing
a regular or special competency examination and/or negotiating for reduction
or waiver of further requirements.
13. When all course requirements have been met, the student will be eligible
for graduation as determined by the departments.
14. The College does not guarantee graduation at a predetermined time
for advanced standing students. If the student progresses at the "normal"
pace, one could anticipate graduating in three years. If clinically proficient,
the student could graduate in less than three years.
Approved by the Faculty on March 13, 1992, and by the Academic
Coordinating Committee on March 18, 1992. Revised: April 6, 1994; December
