Advanced Dental Education

Pediatric Dentistry Program

2009-2010

The University of Nebraska Medical Center College of Dentistry has offered a fully accredited advanced education program in Pediatric Dentistry since 1947. The program leads to a Certificate of Specialization in Pediatric Dentistry which satisfies the requirements mandated by the American Board of Pediatric Dentistry for Examination and Board Certification.

CERTIFICATE PROGRAM

The program leading toward the attainment of a Certificate of Specialization in Pediatric Dentistry commences each year on July 1 and is a minimum of 24 consecutive months in length. The didactic and clinical curricula are designed to allow an individual to develop those skills required by the practicing pediatric dentist. A research project is required.

APPLICATION

Residents accepted for postgraduate training in pediatric dentistry must have a professional dental degree from an A.D.A.-accredited dental college or school.  Provisional acceptance may be offered to candidates in the final stages of dental education.  At the present time foreign trained dentists (non-U.S. or Canadian dental degrees) are not being accepted for the post-graduate pediatric training program.

Applications to Postgraduate Pediatric Dentistry for a program leading to a Certificate of Specialization should be sent to Postgraduate Admissions, UNMC College of Dentistry, on or before October 1 of the year before desired entry.

The postdoctoral program in Pediatric Dentistry participates in the PASS program.   Those interested in applying to the program should complete the PASS "Request for Applicant Agreement."  The Postdoctoral Application Support Service (PASS) is a central application service.  With PASS, applicants complete one standard application, which is then distributed to each of the participating programs to which the applicant wishes to apply.  PASS deals with the initial stages of the recruitment process, prior to the evaluation of applicants by the programs.

PASS has been designed and is being administered by the American Dental Education Association (ADEA).  This address is:

Internet Web Site:   www.ADEA.org

Do not submit your Application Request Card before May 1.   Application material will not be mailed to applicants before June 1.

The Postdoctoral Dental Matching Program provides a mechanism for the simultaneous offering of positions by programs and the acceptance or rejection of offers by applicants.  The Matching Program deals with the later stages of the recruitment process, after applicants have been evaluated by programs.  The Matching Program is administered by National Matching Services, Inc., acting as an independent contractor to the Sponsoring Organizations.  This address is:

The deadline to have an application agreement to participate in the matching program is typically around October 1,  but should be confirmed with the Matching Service.

Please call the Postgraduate Dental Programs Office (402) 472-6261 if you need clarification of these two services.

Admissions to pursue postgraduate work in pediatric dentistry are limited to four (4) first year residents each year.  Preference is given to those who have adequate preparation and aptitude.  Applicants for the programs are considered on the basis of the following factors:

Grade point average

Class standing

Pattern of academic achievement

National board examination scores

Experience and training

Recommendations

Personal statement of goals (include explanation for choice of graduate field, expectations for learning in your chosen field of study, and anticipated career goals)

Other supporting evidence such as a CV or résumé

This program will be ranking all applicants on a "Rank Order List" that must be submitted to the matching service by their deadline.  Therefore, it would be advantageous to submit your application to this program through PASS (as well as to the matching service) as soon as possible so that a personal interview can be arranged before their deadline.

Immunizations
The University of Nebraska Medical Center College of Dentistry policy requires that all entering
residents in programs requiring patient contact must be vaccinated or exhibit active immunity to tetanus, measles*, mumps, diphtheria, chicken pox, polio, rubella and Hepatitis B and have had a TB skin test within the last six months, unless the resident has a previous positive test/medical contraindication. Each entering resident must verify at the time of matriculation that he or she has completed the accepted routine of vaccinations. An immunization record is required in order for the resident to be registered. *Anyone born after 1957 is required to have two measles vaccinations to assure immunity, with the second one given after 1980.
