Passion, intellect and some of the highest test scores in the nation link each student enrolled in UNMC’s College of Dentistry.

“Our students are motivated to succeed, driven to help others and passionate about the profession,” said Curt Kuster, D.D.S., director of recruitment at the college.

Year after year, the grade point averages of many of the entering classes are among the best in the nation and their performance on national board exams exceeds expectations.

The dental class of 2009 is evidence of this as all of the students aced both parts of the national board exam with 100 percent pass rates.

“It’s an accomplishment you don’t often see, but one that reflects the intelligence and drive of our students,” said John Reinhardt, D.D.S., dean of the college.

Lori Petersen exemplifies the type of student accepted into the college.

Her enthusiasm for dentistry led her on an amazing 10-day journey to remote Peruvian villages in 2008.

With no formal training, Petersen spent six days in a clinic, where she pulled teeth, gave shots and performed cleanings on at least 10 patients a day.

“After pulling my very first tooth from a patient, I knew I loved dentistry and wanted to make a difference,” Peterson said. “UNMC is helping me realize that dream.”
