Welcome to the CNND
I am pleased to welcome you to our research center. The Center for Neurovirology and Neurodegenerative Disorders (CNND) has a defined focus to bring basic scientists and clinicians together to explore the mechanisms of and therapeutic options for neurodegenerative disorders (including but not limited to Alzheimer's disease, HIV-1 dementia and Parkinson's disease). The CNND is built not on a single disease but on a pathogenic concept. This concept is that the pathophysiological basis for neurodegenerative disorders revolves around brain inflammation and the production of neurotoxic factors by glial cells. Such glial activation can occur regardless of the pathogenic insult whether it be a microbial pathogen, trauma or an abnormal host protein. The CNND brings together basic laboratory investigators expert in electrophysiology, cellular immunology, neurobiology, neurochemistry, pharmacology, and molecular genetics with clinicians to study the role of brain inflammation in neuronal damage. Clinical investigators include psychiatrists, geriatricians, clinical virologists, neurologists, neuropathologists, and neuroradiologists. All of the CNND staff work with common purpose to uncover the means for diagnosis and treatments of neurodegenerative disorders. Please visit or call on us any time.
