Graduate Student Association

Welcome to the Graduate Student Association Website

The Graduate Student Association (GSA) is the representative body for graduate students at UNMC. The goal of GSA is to be the voice of the graduate student body, to represent graduate student interest as a whole, to investigate and propose solutions to problems unique to graduate students, to develop the intellectual environment of our graduate student population, and sponsor opportunities for professional development.

The GSA will host meetings on the first Tuesday of every month. Every one is welcome to attend and become a part of GSA. At these meetings we will discuss topics or problems that students encounter and pass on new information to the students from the Graduate Council and the Student Senate. GSA also invites seminar speakers to come to campus allowing students to learn more about the different opportunities and careers available to Ph.D. scientists.

The GSA increases the opportunities for social interaction among our graduate students by hosting social events throughout the year.

Our organization is run by the Executive Council that is composed of five offices: President, Vice-President, Secretary, Treasurer, and Social Chair. Students hold office in the Executive Council for one-year terms, and the President is limited to two terms. Each June, the GSA elects their president for the upcoming academic year and the remaining office spots are filled at the subsequent meeting. Members of the Executive Council are eligible to run for the office of President, whereas active members of the GSA are eligible to run for the other office positions in the Executive Council.

Additionally, our organization tackles issues brought to our attention by forming committees composed of active members of the GSA. Each committee is chaired by a member of the Executive Council. We currently have six active committees. A description for each one is given below:

Communications Committee: This committee is composed of members of the GSA that have volunteered to participate in the UNMC Graduate Student Blog as our regular bloggers and to help construct materials that will allow us to advertise the association.

Student Quality of Life: This committee oversees issues that impact every day life of a graduate students. The committee explores options to identify these problems and present solutions at our monthly meetings.

Career Development: The committee is responsible for scheduling seminars and workshops that are related to the advancement of graduate student professional career.

Social Event: The responsibility of this committee is to promote the social interaction of our graduate students by scheduling and hosting GSA sponsored social events.

Academic Affairs: This committee oversees the proper distribution of information relevant to master and doctoral students. This committee oversees the pre-matriculation site available through Blackboard and the GSA webpage. Specifically, the committee writes up updates for the "Unofficial Student Guide" on the pre-matriculation site and the Incoming Survival Student Guide on our webpage.

The success of this organization will be dependent on the involvement of the graduate students. There are many opportunities for our graduate student to be involved. We encourage our graduate student to be proactive and contribute towards the development of our organization and the university.
